Sunday is Laundry Day
Sunday, July 8, 2007

Today I did the wash with Mama. Its hard on the hands mut not so bad. I think I got the hang of it by the end. And its really only my pants that are really dirty. First you use a big peice of the bar soap (that is used to wash everything) and rub it on the clothes. Then you grab two sections and rub them togther very fast. The rough material of my jeans hurt my hands alittle but everything else was ok. I have ALOT of clothes. I don't have to do laundry that often but when I do it takes at least 2 hours total including time to fetch the water.

After, I went to church with Mama. It was the Anglican church and it was in KiEmbu so I had NO idea what was going on. The songs were nice, though again I didn't know the words. The most lively songs were during the collections which I thought was funny. Lots of singing, clapping, and swaying, laughing and dancing. I wish I could have understood more. I think next week I will try the catholic church. I hope it's in english. Atleast I'll know whats going on even if I don't understand the words.

Afterwards, I went to Mercy Kagendo's house. Its quite far away but a really nice home. Very simple but clean and neat. Three of her sisters were there and one brother. They have a large car battery generator and the radio was blaring. The station played alot of American songs and we were all singing along. The younger sister was so cute. Mercy has made a list of all the volunteers to come to Karago - 26 total so far. The first came 4 years ago. Many more than I thought. Several were from Denmark, some from Holland, Korea, Austria, France, Australia, and Canada. I am the first from the US. They have a passion fruit vine near their house and I ate several and brought some more home with me. They are very sour but I like them alot.
