An Earth Rattling Home Visit
Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Today was also a good day. At school I had to lay down the lay alittle bit...haha. It will be good in the long run though. The kids have gotten more comfortable with me and they know that I will never beat them so they try to take advantage.
I met with the environmental crew and their essays were very good but need to be longer. Afterwards, I visited Patrick Mugendi, the son of the cook at school. She was not home though and he is only 12 (class 5) and his english is not so good yet. There was alot of silence. Then his neighbor Granton came over. He is only 7 (class 2) but he was VERY good at english. He totally cracked me up. He has the most expressive face I have ever seen and the things he would come out with were just hysterical. I am laughing just thinking of his facial expressions and bubbly character.
Also during the visit the earth shook! Just alittle bit, but enough to be noticable. A very strange sensation for me. I found out later that there was another one later that night. Nairobi also had some more severe earthquakes and even worse in the Rift Valley. They were nothing horrific like they have in Japan or India though. I thought it was kind of cool actually...though I'm sure if it had been any bigger I would have been really scared.
The teachers were talking about it in school - I think they get a confused version of science regarding some things. They were saying that earth quakes only happen near the coast and that there are many black holes in the ocean and some on land. Mmm not too sure about that one.
